Highwater – The Woodwork EP (2012)

Highwater is a four-piece indie rock band from Brownstown, Michigan. Actually, that doesn’t even begin to cover it. Their debut EP entitled The Woodwork is 21 and a half minutes of music that can’t be labeled with one or two genres without leaving out another important aspect of the band’s sound. Tracks like “West Jefferson”, “Ranger Lake”, and “Infinite” put off much more of a punk/pop punk vibe because of the instruments as well as the vocals, while the remaining three tracks have a little bit of everything. My personal favourite is the title track because it definitely does have a little bit of everything. “The Woodwork” is a very powerful track with strong vocals, excellent riffs, and low end bass. When these things come together at once, it makes for an exceptional song that sets up the final track, “Showtime At The Apollo”, very well. Everything about this release is impressive but my favourite parts are the lyrics and the excellent melodies (especially on “Infinite”). The vocals took a little bit to get used to because they’re pretty raw and a bit raspy (actually, similar to Balance & Composure at times), but I’m sure they’ll grow on you just as they did on me!

If you’re into indie and punk music, I suggest that you give Highwater’s The Woodwork a few spins. Almost every song sounds entirely different than the song before which makes for a very diverse release.
