Here we are again with a review of an unsigned band with not too many likes on Facebook. That must mean they sound terrible, right? Absolutely not! When I initially stumbled across this four-piece called Blind of 69, I liked what I was hearing. The instrumentation on their 2012 release entitled More Than I Could Ever Give reminded me of several pop punk bands, but there were twists and turns along the way that kept my interest. Also, despite the fact that they’re from Austria, the vocals were extremely easy to understand. Now, Blind of 69 is back with another EP entitled Detached. This time around, they have went with a different approach by blending pop punk, emo and punk, rather than sticking to a fairly straightforward pop punk sound.
While Detached is an extremely short EP that clocks in at a mere six minutes, it packs one heck of a punch. The instrumentation is much flashier (the riffs are more melodic, the drumming more technical and the bass audible) and, as if they weren’t already good enough, the vocals have improved immensely. The first track, which is also the title track, is very strong from start to finish; however, “Detached” is not the best of two tracks.
“Weak & Fragile,” the only other track on the EP, is one of those songs that I could listen to all day. The lyrics and vocals are incredibly heartfelt and catchy, the drumming is particularly impressive and the guitar and bass parts sound excellent. Every time “Weak & Fragile” nears its end, I find myself belting out “Someone curse me / It’s like I don’t know myself / I act like a puppet on a string” then quickly scrambling for the replay button.
If you’re a fan of bands like Title Fight, Citizen and Turnover, Blind of 69’s new EP will most likely be on constant rotation for some time to come. Detached is edgy, catchy and very fun to listen to. Aside from having a bit more material on this EP, what else could you possibly ask for from Blind of 69?
