Riff Ram Shark – Hartford (2011)

Riff Ram Shark is different. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is completely up to you. If you come into this album thinking it’s going to be a normal metalcore album (go see how I feel about metalcore in my Erra review here) then this will probably give you quite a ride.

For the most part, this album is a big breakdown, but it’s not a breakdown that just seems to be recycled over and over. There are a lot of synth sections and soft parts of songs that give the heavy chugs a break. There’s actually a whole interlude dead center of the album that really takes you away. The song isn’t just thrown in for the sake of something different either it fits. Most of this release is actually crafted extremely good and it flows quite nicely throughout.

The vocals match the overall feel of the music and they’re actually pretty good. The guitars show signs of having talent, but there really isn’t any part of the album that really showcases any fantastic skills. The drums are what you expect, keeping up with the breakdowns with double bass and all that jazz that you get from metalcore drums.Overall, Riff Ram Shark put together a solid release. It’s not groundbreaking by any means, but it is a nice break from some of the other things in metalcore. threeandhalf-2755572
