“Man, I went to the doctor the other day. All this guy did was suck blood out of my neck. Never go to see Dr. Acula”. A classic line from a genius comedian, who would’ve thought that it would dawn one of the hardest working deathcore bands to date. In case you haven’t guessed it yet, today’s review is brought to you by Dr. Acula and their latest release Nation. This six-piece, double vocalist bombshell of a band is hitting us up with their second official release on Victory Records and ladies and gents, it’s a doosie! Any old fan of DA will know that they started off as bigger jokers than Attila, dedicating an entire album to R.L. Stein’s “Goosebumps” series. The rough and tough band has certainly come a long way from the beginning in 2005, but haven’t lost one shred of the care-free, smoke weed, and party all night attitude!
The one thing I have loved about Dr. Acula is their ability to use so many sound bits from so many different sources and blend them together with heavy breakdowns and mixed ranges of vocals. The fact that Dr. Acula can start and end their songs so smoothly and have them progress right into each other is something I’ve been meaning to give them props for since I first heard Slander. Lucky for us, they took every good thing about Slander and upped the heaviness to create what we now have as Nation.
Dr. Acula have made it their mission to occupy and take over every single city they tour in, which shouldn’t be an issue because these six guys spend countless weeks a year touring North America. If you’re not a fan of these guys, you’re truly missing out on some top notch deathcore done right with an Attila-style attitude that no matter what your personality, you just have to love. My only complaint about the new album is that the production seems to be a little off. Regardless, it’s not something that should turn you off the album because the heaviness, the breakdowns, and the great vocal range provided by both vocalists is just phenomenal. There’s very few bands out there that even have dual vocalists, but Dr. Acula would definitely not be the same without one or the other, they complete every single song on the past two releases.
If you have a rocking sense of humor and deathcore tickles your fancy, be sure to pick up Dr. Acula’s Nation on June. 19th. Also catch them all throughout North America up until August 2nd with various different bands! Dr. Acula is sweeping the nation one city at a time, keep your eyes peeled for when they take over yours!
