Charon is a metal/melodic hardcore band from the UK. Charon plays a similar style to Heights’ and Heart In Hand’s styles, in which they are mostly metal/hardcore, but also have many melodic hardcore influences. Their debut EP, Migrating North, was released on October 28th, 2011. When listening to Migrating North, you will hear some passionate vocals and very good melodic guitar leads. The first song on the EP, The Shoreline, is the best. That’s not to say the rest of the EP is bad though. The guitar leads and drumming compliment the vocals very well in this song. The next song features some more good guitar leads and a pretty “bouncy” breakdown. The third song on Migrating North, I Will Overcome, is the song that got me into this band. I heard I Will Overcome on YouTube and had to make sure to remind myself to check out Migrating North when it was released. I Will Overcome would be my favourite song on the EP, but it kind of starts to drag on and gets a little repetitive near the end. The title track, Migrating North is an instrumental that fits in really well. It maintains a nice melody, without getting too carried away. The final song of the EP, Running With Wolves, has a very similar verse to another song that I love, but I just can’t put my finger on it. I have another minor issue with this song, and that is the way that it abruptly ends. That being said, Running With Wolves is my 2nd favourite song on the EP. Migrating North isn’t bringing anything new or groundbreaking to the table, but it’s a pretty good start for an up-and-coming band. This band has a lot of promise and you should make sure to give this band’s EP a listen.
