After stumbling across I Am Abomination’s lead single/music video (“Since 1776”) for their debut full-length entitled To Our Forefathers, I was in a state of awe. I immediately fell in love with I Am Abomination because the clean vocals sounded fantastic and the guitar work was masterful; the latter is almost unheard of from most post-hardcore bands. I was extremely impressed with To Our Forefathers and to this day, I still enjoy it very much and consider it as one of my favourite post-hardcore albums.
The band’s follow-up to To Our Forefathers was the Passion Of The Heist EP. I was expecting great things and I definitely got that, but it still wasn’t what I was hoping for. The style was very similar and I felt like I already heard most of the new material before I even finished listening to.
Just a few months after the release of Passion Of The Heist, I Am Abomination released a new single, “Hangin’ On”. While it was very similar again, there was just enough change and a few surprises to keep my interest for the four minutes that it was ringing through my ears. It was around this time that the band also announced that they would be self-releasing an album within the next year.
In the past few months, I Am Abomination has released two more new singles, “To Rebuild” and “Ninety Nine”, taken from their forthcoming album which is entitled Let The Future Tell The Truth. Both of these tracks are extremely impressive instrumentally and vocally, but at the same time, they face the same problem as the band’s previous EP. As I was listening to these songs, I felt like I had already heard it all.
I Am Abomination still produces music that oozes talent, but their best work is behind them. Honestly, I hope that Phil and Nick start a new project or change up their style soon because they are arguably two of the most talented vocalists and guitarists respectively, but you can only write so many songs with a similar blueprint so many times before it becomes predictable and somewhat lackluster. At the very least, I hope the forthcoming album has more than a few surprises. However, after hearing the previously released “To Rebuild” and “Ninety Nine”, I have a feeling that they’re “playing it safe” with Let The Future Tell The Truth. Just to be sure, though, I’ll wait until the album releases on November 27th to pass judgment. Maybe they’ll prove me wrong!
