Every Time I Die and The Ghost Inside brought their co-headliner to New York City’s Webster Hall on December 12. I wasn’t sure what to expect for my first show in Manhattan as the crowd, small at first, quickly filled in for Backtrack. From the area, Backtrack has a no-gimmick hardcore sound that got the crowd throwing punches and grabbing mics – despite the unusual big venue setting for this band. Hundredth, the band I was most eager to see, was next. This band’s melodic hardcore sound and live performance is something that takes a while to catch onto you. Once it does, though, you realize how hard it hits. I had seen Hundredth twice several years ago, but I wouldn’t call myself a fan until this past year. The band played songs from most of its releases, ending the set with a massive breakdown taken from the end of the track “Soul” that sent the crowd into a moshing frenzy. Architects was next and brought one of the fullest sounds of the night. The floor was literally bouncing up and down with the crowd when the set kicked off and I was worried the venue may collapse into the other show happening downstairs. Fortunately, this did not happen. The Ghost Inside, one of my favourite bands, played a headline worthy set next. The crowd sang the loudest for these guys, nailing every part when the band stopped playing to let the crowd fill in the gaps. Vocalist Jonathan Vigil also took some time to poke fun at the New York Rangers fan-packed crowd, as he’s an extremely loyal LA Kings fan. Every Time I Die closed out the night. I had been talking with my friend before the set, doubting that people still cared about this band. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This was Every Time I Die’s biggest headlining show ever, with two members celebrating a birthday as a bonus. There was cake distributed (rather, destroyed) throughout the crowd – which was wild the whole set. Everyone from the floor to the balcony was screaming lyrics. This show not only proved to me that Every Time I Die is still relevant, but also that the band is stronger than ever in the scene. Check out some photos from this energetic night below.
