Currents formed in the latter months of 2011 and just a few short months later, they released an EP entitled The King. This five-piece hardcore band from Houston, Texas plays spirit-filled hardcore in the veins of Sleeping Giant and Gideon. If you’re a fan of either of the aforementioned bands, keep an eye out for their debut full-length album entitled Spirit And Truth. With lyrics like “I answer to no one but the King” (“Deliverer”) and “We are looking forward to the great city of God” (“Looking Forward”), it should be clear that Currents is a Christian band, but they don’t exactly shove their beliefs down your throat the entire album. In other words, if you’re a non-believer, the lyrics shouldn’t have much of an effect on you. Also, there are some other good lyrics that have multiple meanings and aren’t entirely inspired by religion. My personal favourite is “We’ve been through thick and thin and we will not lose heart” heard on “Heart”.
Music-wise, Spirit And Truth is fairly aggressive and straight to the point, but there are a few anomalies. The interlude and outro, “Relived” and “Immovable”, can be likened to For Today because of the singing/spoken word lyrics and calming vibe that they put off. “Heart”, “Meaningless”, and “Deliverer” are noteworthy tracks as well as they are three of the most melodic and/or strongest tracks on the album.
The rest of Spirit And Truth becomes a little bit bland at times. The remaining tracks follow a very similar song structure and there isn’t really too much to help differentiate between tracks. Thankfully, the tracks that I previously mentioned spread out across the entire album so just when it starts to become a little bland, you’re hit with one of the stronger songs and that momentary bad taste in your mouth goes away.
It has its ups and downs, but Spirit And Truth is a very solid release that will cause some buzz in the hardcore scene. Spirit And Truth hits the shelves on November 13th via Red Cord Records, and if you’re a fan of hardcore with melodic influences, this is a band and album that I strongly recommend for you to keep an eye out for.
