Elegist, a five-piece metalcore band from Sydney, Australia, is probably a band you haven’t heard of, but is a band that definitely deserves your attention. They play a style of metalcore that’s reminiscent of more well-known bands like Volumes and Bermuda, but they do so with an approach that bars them from sounding like a clone of either of the aforementioned groups. Elegist’s debut self-titled EP, which was released on September 1st, is a very powerful and dynamic EP. Throughout the course of eighteen minutes and fifty-seven seconds, Elegist throws everything they’ve got at you: strong vocals, crushing breakdowns, melodic guitar riffs, and crunchy riffs that summon forth thoughts of bands like Structures. This EP has it all and will almost certainly leave you wanting more. The fourth track on the EP, “Tidal,” is perhaps the track that best showcases Elegist’s dynamism. About halfway through the track, there is an absolutely devastating and gritty breakdown that puts a lot of “heavy” bands to shame. After the breakdown subsides, the band immediately picks the pace back up and closes out the track with some very melodic guitar leads. While Elegist doesn’t have the benefit of being signed to a major label and being as well-known as some of their contemporaries, they still know how to produce some excellent music. Their debut EP is an outstanding release that showcases a lot of potential and is definitely worth your time.
